Growth Tip #16: The Editorial & Social Calendar Strategy

Marketing is all about generating awareness for your business that leads to conversations with your potential customers.
These conversations come in the form of post, video, social post, chats, and in person conversations. When done right, those conversations turn into “dates” such as a lead magnet download, webinar registration, or a tiny purchase. After that, the new customer buys your core product offering. The whole process is very similar to developing a relationship with a new friend or love interest.
Now imagine you met an attractive person at a party. You promise to contact them the next day but only sporadically contacted them, say on holidays. A year goes by and you’re frustrated that your relationship hasn’t advanced to exclusive status.
The irony is this is how most businesses treat marketing communications. They don’t put in the time to be consistent in developing a relationship with potential customers and then cry at the end of the year when they didn’t hit their revenue goals.
But not you, you’ll take time to create an Editorial and Social Calendar. Doing so will allow you to be consistent in your social media communities, with your customers, and other digital social “watering holes” out there.
Calendars not only help you plan when to post, but they help you know exactly what to post. The question “what should I post about” only needs to be addressed a few times a year and the rest is just being consistent.

How to execute this growth tip


Sign up for one of the tools below. One of the best things you can do to help you post, is to eliminate the need for you to post manually. Build up a queue of content in one of the tools, and let the automation do the heavy lifting for you. Some of the tools even use AI to determine when and what to post.


Create your content calendar. Start by theming each quarter, then sub-theme each month. Break those sub-themes down into daily topics.

For example, I could theme Q1 - Content Creation. Then each month - Video Content, Written Content, Audio Content. Then each day could be "how to create a blog post in under 20 minutes", you get the idea. You can go to Quora.com, Answerthepublic.com, or BuzzSumo for ideas on what people are asking to learn more about.


Be sure to create at least 30 days of content topics in advance. As you get better, you'll be able to plan out the whole year in a single day. Then go to work posting daily. You'll have to create all the images, content, and videos yourself to start, but soon you'll have more business than you know what to do with and can start to hire contractors to help with content creation and promotion.
